What is page yield?

Page yield is the total number of pages a user can print with a given printer and cartridge, based on certain assumptions. Until some time ago, printer manufacturers have used a variety of methodologies to measure cartridge yields, making it challenging for the end users to accurately compare brands.

Some printer manufacturers worked in conjunction with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to develop and create new standards for measuring page yield.

On December 13, 2006, the ISO approved the new standard for colour toner - ISO/IEC 19798 - printer cartridge page yield measurements. This new standard compliment the ISO/IEC 19752 yield standard for monochrome toner cartridges published back in June 2004.

Details of the ISO/IEC standards are available on the Web site www.iso.org

The Value of Recognized Standards

The standards serve as a solid basis for reliably measuring yield. These standards will help to improve yield testing throughout the printing industry and allow true comparisons.

These page yield standards will help the customers to make more informed purchase decisions by objectively and accurately evaluating print cartridge yields. The new ISO standards for toner cartridge yields clearly define the key attributes that affect page yield and apply robust statistical analysis so all manufacturers can utilize the same methodology when measuring yield.

ISO Methodology

The elements that make the ISO standard more rigorous than other proposed methodologies are its explicit test procedures, including test-page definition, statistical sampling and methods, environmental controls, and defined end-of-life conditions. For instance, in the area of statistical sampling, some other methodologies test only one or two cartridges, where the ISO standard requires testing of at least nine of each cartridge to achieve statistical validity.

  • Standard test document: Use of a standard page printed in a controlled environment with printer default settings. This ensures that settings remain consistent across different test events, independent of platform or paper size. The test document works with both letter and A4 paper sizes.

  • Number of cartridges tested: Nine of each cartridge are tested, allowing reliable estimates of lowest predicted yield with 95% statistical confidence.

  • Clear and objective end-of-life criterion: Determines cartridge yield through measurements that establish an end-of-life criterion based on usable pages and that reflect manufacturers' recommendations on how cartridges should be handled as they approach end of life (for example, how many times they should be shaken). These recommendations are designed to reflect end users' behavior.

  • Number of printers: Cartridges are tested on three different printers (three cartridges on each printer) to avoid bias due to printer variability.

  • Controlled environment: Printing environment is controlled and consistent because temperature and humidity variations affect cartridge yield.

For reliable comparisons, cartridge yields from the products of different suppliers must be measured in accordance with a single, consistent standard. Cartridge yields determined using other methodologies are not comparable to those determined in accordance with the ISO standard.

NOTE: For all products compatible with printers sold before June, 1999 the published yields are based on our previous yield measurement methodology. Our previous method was widely accepted by the industry and uses a test page based on 5% coverage.

Measuring Monochrome Laser Toner Cartridges Yield:
ISO/IEC 19752

Consumers want to make informed decisions when buying printing supplies and in accordance with their different needs, they often want to compare costs. When comparing costs, consumers need to look at a range of factors, including quality and reliability. Page yields and cost-per-page estimates are one piece of the puzzle.

In June 2004 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the ISO/IEC 19752 toner cartridge yield standard for monochrome laser printers. Several OEMs actively participated in developing this standard and support its industry-wide use.

The standard addresses a broad range of important factors that affect yield and yield measurement including the test document, print job size, print quality modes, end-of-life determination, sample size and environmental conditions. A broadly adopted standard of this rigor represents a breakthrough in giving customers yield information that can be accurately compared.

Turbon believes that this standard brings benefits for the customers and for the printing industry. Therefore, Turbon adopted the ISO/IEC 19752 standard for measuring the monochrome IBM Replacement Toner Cartridges yield. The results are documented in all our production facilities.

Measuring Color Laser Toner Cartridges Yield:
ISO/IEC 19798

Comparing color laser yield measurements across manufacturers is difficult. Numerous factors affect yield measurement including the test document, print job size, print quality modes, end-of-life determination, sample size and environmental conditions.

The ISO/IEC 19798:2007 defines a method for testing and calculation of average yield measured in the number of standard pages for a colour toner cartridge and specific printer printing in a semi-continuous mode under a defined set of conditions. It uses the test page suite defined in ISO/IEC 24712.

The ISO/IEC 19798:2007 is only intended for the measurement of colour toner cartridge yield. No other claims can be made from this testing regarding quality, reliability, etc.

The ISO/IEC 24712:2007 defines colour test pages for the measurement of consumable yield. The test page suite includes four "customer" type documents and one "diagnostic" page that is used to determine end of ink or toner consumable life.

The ISO/IEC 24712:2007 provides a set of test pages to be used in the testing of consumable yield. The procedure for using these pages is detailed in ISO/IEC 19798.

These pages are intended to represent some of the document types that are used in the office and home. They are not intended to represent special applications such as photo printing.
